High School Experiences
For many students, the years they spend in high school can be the most important within their academic career. These four years are the time in which many youths determine the path they will continue down for the rest of their lives. Whether it is to pursue a career in the vocational field, earn the best grades in order to attend the most prestigious colleges, or to simply earn a diploma, high school is one of the greatest indicators of one’s future. Smithfield High School, the secondary school in which I attended, is in my opinion one of the best public high school’s within the state of Rhode Island. I believe that when a student within this school takes advantage of the opportunities allocated to them, their educational growth has the potential to be abundant. I am confident in making such a claim because I exploited many academic and extracurricular opportunities within high school, which greatly aided as to where I am now academically.

The numerous extracurricular activities in which I participated in high school helped shape the person I am today. The extracurricular that consumed the most of my time within high school was undoubtedly tennis. It also was the activity that molded me most into the person I am today. Being the captain of an undefeated division II state championship girls’ varsity tennis team took a relentless amount of motivation, passion and leadership. These qualities are ones that I implement on a daily basis, and would have trouble functioning effectively without.

Additionally, the other academic after school groups I attended assisted me in determining where I wanted to go in terms of a career path. In particular, Science Olympiad allowed me to recognize, while I found the sciences to be very interesting, that I would not be driven to study it for the next four years. On the other hand, another extracurricular I participated in known as the state mock trial, solidified my notion of becoming a lawyer. This state mock trial was a staged trial that took place in a Providence court in front of a real lawyer. It took many hours of preparation to effectively prepare for the day, and while nerve-racking, I loved it. Moreover, the two law classes that were offered by my high school turned out to be my favorite classes in the system. I had originally had little interest in taking these courses, and had it not been for the teacher (also my tennis coach) encouraging me to do so because he thought I had potential, I would not have signed up for the course, and perhaps still not know what to do in terms of a career path. I owe a great deal to this teacher for recognizing my abilities both on and off the court, and being willing and able to foster them. He was both an influential coach and teacher, having helped shaped me into the person I am, and continuing to do so to this day.

Had it not been for the amazing program and teachers within Smithfield High School, I do not believe I would be the same student or person I am today. These opportunities and employees of the system are owed a great deal as to where I am now academically and intellectually. It is for this reason that I believe my high school experiences are one’s in which I could not have progressed effectively without.
